Bollywood Movie Reviews :: Yeh Khula Aasmaan

With the surfacing of quality logical cinema, the film industry is no longer about mainstream masala movies. YEH KHULA AASMAAN is yet another film that intends to stir the soul with a heartwarming tale.YEH KHULA AASMAAN deals with imperative matters of our life, besides bringing back the spirit of kite flying, a great Indian tradition since many generations. The film also attempts to tell the viewer that there are no failures, only setbacks, and one needs to move forward. The message, told in the most subtle manner, does come across effectively in the closing stages. YEH KHULA AASMAAN revolves around Avinash [Raj Tandon], a youngster going through an extremely challenging phase of life due to his academic failures. He feels an immense vacuum which, unfortunately, his busy parents are unable to fill. In desperation, he visits his grandfather [Raghuveer Yadav] after several years. The grandfather uses the 'kite' to subtly impart the lessons of life and prepares Avinash to face life. Under his company, Avinash discovers many unexplored yet invaluable facets of life. YEH KHULA AASMAAN mirrors the pressures the youth faces today [peer, parental and academic pressures]. Director Gitanjali Sinha deserves accolades for thinking out of the box, for choosing a theme you can relate to, but the writing is erratic at times, especially in its second hour. Nonetheless, Gitanjali has handled the delicate moments between the grandfather and the kid well. Besides, the story of peer pressure to score in academics, the conflicting views between the new and old generations, the predicaments and bridging of the generation gap... the film seems like a chapter from our lives. The conclusion to the story -- the kite flying competition -- is appropriate, though, I wish to add, the feeling of euphoria is missing. The film has been shot at some picturesque locales and the location and setting adjoin value to its insightful theme. As for the songs, the title track is soulfully rendered. Raghuveer Yadav enacts the role of a senior citizen most efficiently. Yashpal Sharma does well, but his conversation in English is embarrassing. Raj Tandon and Anya Anand are natural. The supporting cast, all newcomers, is adequate. On the whole, YEH KHULA AASMAAN isn't perfect, but likeable nonetheless. A simple story that strikes a chord!

View the full article

Bollywood Movie Reviews :: Arjun - The Warrior Prince

I genuinely feel that Ramayana and Mahabharata are most fascinating and spellbinding stories. These epics are simply perfect, unique and beyond compare. Naturally, it doesn't come as a surprise that Ramayana and Mahabharata have inspired film-makers in every decade. Though narrated inestimable times on celluloid, director Arnab Chaudhuri attempts an animated mythological that makes you sit back and relish the legend on screen -- ARJUN THE WARRIOR PRINCE.Told with elegance, ARJUN THE WARRIOR PRINCE catches your attention for varied reasons: The animation, which is vivacious and vibrant, the energetic combat scenes, but most importantly, it's narrated in the most simplistic manner. For those who're well aware, and even those who aren't, it's a faithful retelling of one of our favorite stories. Even the speech is not chaste Sanskrit and strikes a chord with the viewer. The epic animated feature narrates the heroic journey of the legendary warrior prince, Arjun, from the days of his youthful innocence to his emergence as a valiant hero, who single-handedly took on an entire army. It explores his life with his brothers in Hastinapur, his training and education and his ultimate discovery of the warrior within himself. While ARJUN THE WARRIOR PRINCE takes a step frontward as far as the animation is concerned -- the conception artists have worked really hard to recreate the era, while the animators breathe life into them -- the two issues that I have with the film is [i] The leisurely pacing, at times, destabilizes these efforts and [ii] The culmination seems abrupt. Ideally, one would've expected the storyteller to include the historic Kurukshetra war between Pandavas and Kauravas, but it concludes prior to that. Seems like the director was in a tearing rush to conclude the film. Yet, despite the inadequacies, I'd like to make a special note of the animatronics here, which is more refined than the animation films made in India. The animation is not superlative, but much superior to most we've witnessed thus far. If you've braved the animation films made in India in the past, this one will come as a pleasant and welcome change. On the whole, ARJUN THE WARRIOR PRINCE needs to be watched for its animation, for its storytelling and most importantly, it makes an earnest effort to relive the mythology.

View the full article

The movie is set in Banaras in today's time of politics and corruption. Shravan is a simple but righteous son of a peon who joins Banaras University for his post graduation on his father's insistence. He is romantically inclined toward the Principal's daughter. A University topper and a man of principles, Shravan notices that a lot of corruption is happening in the University. He actively involves himself in the fight against corruption. This fight doesn't go unnoticed by the local MLA Dharmraj Chaudhary, who finds ways to push Shravan to the edge and destroys everything in his life. After Shravan's life is saved by an honest cop, he makes a pledge to fight back. In the most smartly directed action sequences, Shravan transitions into Pandit, a goon who only fights with Chaudhary and his brothers Balraj and Yograj to take revenge. In the strange twist and turn of event, Pandit becomes successful in taking his revenge and ends his phase as Pandit on the note of redemption.

View the full article

Bollywood Music Reviews :: Rakhtbeej

EXPECTATIONSWhen it is tough to decipher even the meaning of a film's title, there are all the less expectations that one has from the music. Add to that the fact that there is absolutely nothing known about Rakhtbeej and apprehensions about this musical score from Satish-Ajay (with lyrics by Ravi Mantwal) only grows further. MUSICMamta Sharma is the voice for Rakhi Sawant as she goes about singing 'Lattoo'. While there is no denying the fact that for any song to work it is the basic tune that plays an important role, once can also not ignore the fact that it also depends upon the overall setting as well. Mamta had has recently delivered a hit with another raunchy number 'Aa Re Pritam Pyaare' and one of the major reasons it works is due to the platform it enjoys. Now in 'Latto' too Mamta does well but neither the tune nor the setting compliments her presence behind the mike which means the song would disappear in a jiffy. The way 'Itni Bhi Main Buri Nahi', it gives an indication of a love song in the offering. However its arrangements are so old fashioned that one fasts loses interest. As Neha Bhasin begins her rendition, you know that this one is a song of seduction. With lyrics that go as 'Baby I Am On Fire', you know that the setting here totally belongs to the 90s (and that too in not in a very good way). Co-composer Ajay (Mantwal) brings himself on as a singer as well (after 'Latoo') but doesn't register any impact. So is the case with the song as well which belongs to quick skip variety. There is some spunk though in the way title song 'Rakhtbeej' begins. With a Western setting to it, it also has some vociferous singing from 'Vinod Rathod'. There are some heavy duty lyrics that take forward this song that may come during the opening credit sequence and some dramatic junctions of the film. However the song never manages to make an impression that would qualify it to be heard outside the film's narrative. Only number that actually manages to catch your attention to some extent at least is 'Adha Gila'. Aishwarya Nigam sings this one with a punch as he goes about narrating the conflict which plays in the mind of the central protagonist. Ravi Mantwal's lyrics are good here as they well establish all things that have been left mid-way for the lead character here. This one has the potential to make an impact as a montage sequence. Later Aishwarya also sings a much slower 'sad version' though one would still want to go back to the original number. However all enthusiasm goes for a toss as a well tuned song is let down by the vocals of newcomer Nidhi Prabha. With all due encouragement for young talent, the fact remains that 'Naina Hue Banware' could have turned out to be a much better outing (it isn't great but still can be heard at least) if only there was a better singer at the helm of affairs. A mandatory club song makes an appearance soon after in the form of 'Bolbaala' and manages to dilute the disappointment of the song gone by to a little extent at least. Leave aside lyrics like 'Whole Night Party Karenge, Tere Baap Ka Kya', this one benefits from a safe tune that can promise some interest level amongst audience if complimented by good visuals. Sung by Abhijeet Sawant, Deepak Giri and Chandana Baruah, 'Bolbaala' is repeated with Shaan and Chandana. This one is at least catchy, a feat that not many songs in the album otherwise manage. OVERALLA largely forgettable soundtrack, it is hardly expected to help the film's cause. OUR PICK(S) Adha Gila

View the full article

Bollywood Music Reviews :: Yeh Khula Aasmaan

EXPECTATIONSThere isn't much known about the film Yeh Khula Aasmaan expect for the fact that it is about a boy who is facing challenges in his life during his growing up years. Since the film has an offbeat theme, one expects the same from the music as well. The film marks the comeback of composer duo of Anand-Milind but one does wonder what's the kind of soundtrack they would have in the offing here. Ravi Chopra is the lyricist. MUSICThe way 'Har Ghadi' begins, one is instantly reminded of 'Jab Koyi Baat Bigad Jaaye' [Jurm] which itself was an inspiration from a Western song. Nevertheless, despite the similarities here, 'Har Ghadi' by Kunal Ganjawalla does stay with you after it has been heard first. A sad song about the protagonist who is wondering about things going wrong in his life, it is a rather uncharacteristic beginning to the album. After Kunal, it is the turn of Gayatri Ganjawalla to come behind the mike, this time for 'Tum Mile'. Lyrics here are quite ordinary though with routine words spun to make a romantic outing that has Soham Chakraborty joining Gayatri behind the mike. The tune by itself isn't any exciting either and seems like a pale shadow of the wonderful work that Anand-Milind had come up with during the 90s. Moreover, even the arrangements are way too ordinary in the name of being simple. Suresh Wadekar and Swapnil Bandodkar come together for 'Aari Aari', a lullaby. Sounding nothing better than a 'sugam sangeet' outing that was left way back in the 80s, this one further adds on to the dull mood of the album and actually succeeds in putting a listener to sleep. Raghubir Yadav tries to perk up the proceedings with 'Ur Fur Kar' but the tune is hardly the kind that would make the song cover the kind of distance that his 'Mehngai Dayain' (Peepli [Live] ) had managed. This one too has a rustic flavour to it where Raghubir and Ravi Chopra attempt to draw parallels between life and a kite. However the end result is hardly the kind that would make the song fly high. A much more contemporary version of the same song appears as 'Zindagi Bhi Patang Hai' but beyond adding to the situational appeal of the narrative, this Amey Date sung track hardly leaves an impression. OVERALLYeh Khula Aasmaan promises to tell a noble cause and the music also never loses sight of the message if wants to convey. However the compositions are hardly the kind that leave even a momentary impression, leave aside a long lasting one. OUR PICK(S) Har Ghadi

View the full article

What are you wearing this winter?

Mon, Nov 2 01:15 PM

New Delhi, Oct. 31 -- Casual jackets

The racing and biker jacket: Dress the part if you are a serious biker or racing enthusiast. Choose a short leather jacket in black, white or red, and wear it with a pair of skin-tight and body-hugging jeans. Ideally, your jacket should come fitted with a zip to fasten and be embellished with racing or brand logos. Complete your look with ankle-length leather shoes or high boots. Sports jackets: Pick a trendy sports jacket for yourself (or in support of your favourite team) with reflective strips (ideally on the sleeve). The brighter the colour you choose the better: red, yellow, blue, green and white are your options. Wear fitted half or full sleeve T-shirts and jeans or tracks underneath and accessorise with cloth or leather shoes, a belt with a prominent buckle or a chunky wristwatch. Night

Formal jackets

Styles: Short lengths with deep and flat lapels are strong. Formal jackets look best as suits - wherein the trouser fabric and colour coordinates the jacket. Based on your body type, you can choose between a single and two button jacket - but never wear a double breasted cut to either a cocktail or black tie dinner. Colours: After sunset, always wear deep and dark tones - black, purple, burgundy and royal blue are safe and acceptable options. Fabrics: Your jacket (and trouser) should be made with fabrics that are gloss or sheen-based - either textured or plain. Always opt for rich luxurious fabrics over lightweight cottons and cheap synthetic blends. Match with: Contrasting dressy or plain formal shirts, slim coloured ties, glossy belts, shoes and other leather accessories.

What are you wearing this winter?

That little extra: Piping gives dimension, embroidery looks graphic and prints add character on formal jackets. Day

Semi-casual jackets

Styles: A casual jacket is a 'stand alone' garment and therefore the 'hero' of your overall look and should contrast (both in terms of fabric and colour) with the lowers you are wearing with it. Pick shorter lengths - preferably with a double slit (for better movement and a sexier fit) and experiment with prints - especially small and subtle checks and surface textures. Colours: You can stick to a light or deep palette of all shades (and tones) of grey, blue, brown, olive and beige. Fabrics: Based on the season, your semi-casual jacket could be made with lightweight cotton, corduroy or other slightly thick or coarse fabrics. Whenever possible, choose crease-free fabrics over others. Match with: Jeans - snug or comfort fit, casual and semi formal trousers or straight cut - pinstriped, check or textured pants. That little extra: For a dandier feel, add leather patches on the elbow and collar. Better still - try contrasting coloured lapels and lining on the pockets. Accessories

What you can wear with your favourite jacket Moon phase watch

Wear this multi-dial 'moon watch' with formal suits to enhance your nocturnal nature and to keep track of time when you are out at night or on the prowl. Multicoloured belts

Fasten a dual or multicoloured leather or cloth belt with your semi casual jacket and casual trouser. Pick slim styles with simple buckles and colour combinations that match what you are wearing. Frames

Add a more serious look to your business and work profile. Always choose spectacles that frame the eye area completely - rectangular over round and oval frames. In terms of colour - black, white and red over the mundane (and now somewhat dated) grey and brown. Branded footwear

If labels matter and if you are looking for more than colour to make a statement, you should invest in a pair of branded or designer shoes. Try custom-made for the perfect fit or pick a pair off the counter from a fancy designer store - if not for durability, most definitely for the label and if you don't mind burning a hole in your pocket. Coloured and treated shoes

Casual day and (in some cases) formal footwear for the night can be in shades and colours that go beyond the standard brown and black. We recommend: Yellow, green, red and blue - either plain or intentionally weathered and treated to look textured or old. Comfort footwear

While you have the option of wearing laceless, slip-in styles with casual jackets, you should always wear smart laced shoes with formal jackets and suits. While choosing the finish, opt for a matt texture for the day and glossy or reflective leather for the night. For men in their 20s

When you are younger, subtleties work better than contrasts - go tone on tone: choose a shirt and tie that belong to the same colour family as your jacket or suit. Ensure the jacket is not too long and ends just above the hip level - this will do wonders in making you look both taller and sharper.

For men in their 40s

As maturity sets in, the emphasis should be on a more sober yet smart look for both business travel and day-to-day office wear. Pastel shirts and contrasting plain coloured ties are highly recommended, so are single and two button jackets. Pick shirts with short button-down or cutaway collars.

Hairstyle Trends on the Runway June 2010

Hairstyle Trends on the Runway June 2010

DALLAS,2010 / FW/ — From bouffant hair to the beehive; ponytail to braid and then from bed head to round head, there are as many hairstyles as there are trends on the runway.

At Calvin Klein Collection, Francisco Costa chose pony tails to complement the modern minimalist silhouettes which is the DNA of the brand. It is a very easy look to steal but you have to make sure that your skin is flawless and protected from the sun because with ponytails, your face is exposed from all angles.

At Guy Laroche, Marcel Marongiu that crimped hair which is parted at the middle is the best way to show off the ethereal gowns that could be worn by a Shakespearian nymph. Again, the style is a very easy look to achieve with your ghd styler available.

At Issey Miyake, Dai Fujiwara likes hair straight, parted at the middle and reaches your shoulder. Minimalist like Calvin Klein Collection and an easy hair style to maintain.

Lie Sang Bong, John Galliano at Christian Dior and Toni Maticevski have different vision for your crowning glory though.

At Christian Dior, John Galliano sees women as silver screen sirens, their shoulder length hair curled and puffed out. Again, this look can be achieved with your ghd styler with a minimum of fuss.

Toni Maticevski went for the classic beehive while Lie Sang Bong chose an up do that shows off your face while keeping your hair neat the whole day.

Perhaps, the hardest look to achieve is AF Vandevorst’s bed hair. Puffed out and teased like a beehive, you can still do this look but you might need the help of a friend.

While AF Vandevorst might be a challenge, Alena Akmadullina with the very short bob is the easiest and requires minimum of fuss. You can even air dry your hair.

And finally, Oscar de la Renta made braids in again.

Make-up rules for office

Anupriya and Naina are twins who have just started working. Anupriya is a copywriter at an advertising agency while Naina is an investment banker.
Because of the nature of their jobs, they step out of the house every day looking completely different. "Naina always wears formal clothes. Jeans are what everybody in my team wears," says Anupriya.
Poonam Vakil, a make-up artist, says dressing right is not enough. You have to make sure your make-up complements your image and office atmosphere. Here's what she suggests:

Casual chica

If you have a back-end job in the media, casual is probably the dress code at office. Some tips that would add some spunk to a casual you:

A media job usually means long hours. Many people in these jobs have dark circles under their eyes. Your make-up should conceal this," says Vakil. After applying moisturiser, use a translucent powder to hide your dark circles, suggests Vakil.

Next comes eyeliner and mascara. "Don't wear too much of this if you don't want to look too dolled up. Use a plain gloss or nude colours on your lips so that you don't look too loud," she says.

Vakil says you don't have to use nail paint if your office atmosphere is casual. "But make sure they are neat. They should not be chipped. Use a buffer to smoothen and shine your nails," she says.

Formal façade

Women who meet clients on a regular basis are expected to dress formally in suits or saris to make the right impression. Start with a moisturiser, says Vakil.

Again, make-up should not be too loud but needs to be more defined," she explains. Here's what you do for an impressive formal you:

Vakil recommends a light foundation. "Women who have an oily skin should use a liquid foundation while those with normal or dry skin can use a powder-based foundation," she says.

According to Vakil, your lip and nail colour should also be more obvious. "However, stick to light colours - pinks, browns, or light purples. French manicures look elegant. Avoid any kind of nail art," she says.

The same rules apply to make-up for office parties. "But you can enhance your make-up a little since most parties are in the evening," adds Vakil.

You can slap on some eye shadow and a light blush. A highlighter on your cheekbones, jaw and collarbones will make your face look chiseled," she explains.

Vakil's last piece of advice is that you should always apply moisturiser before your make-up. "This will protect the skin. If you have oily skin, only use a water-based moisturiser. Oil-based moisturisers are only for people with dry skin. Make sure your moisturiser has a minimum SPF of 25," she concludes

Eva Longoria in high heels.

Twenty-eight-year-old Aneeta Trivedi is a model. Her profession requires her to wear high heels on the ramp and off it.
"Stilettos are the backbone of my professional and social image. But by the end of the day, my feet are killing me!" she says.
She also suffers from chronic back pain. High heels usually provide little support to the body, says Dr Jawahar Panjwani, an orthopaedic doctor.

"Wearing heels that are more then two inches high causes the centre of gravity of the body to go out of balance," he explains.

Our experts tell us about the lows of wearing mean heels and the right way to flaunt shoes with those extra inches:

Strenuous Feet

Dr Charaka Arogya, an ayurvedic doctor, says stilettos reduce the blood circulation in your feet causing them to go numb. "An extra amount of weight falls on the forefeet when a woman wears stilettos. Constantly wearing high heels causes extra strain on the feet, leading to discomfort," he explains.

This is why Aneeta's feet ache at the end of the day, he says.

The 'Achilles' factor

Dr Ashwini Manjrekar, an orthopaedic doctor, says high heels affect the Achilles tendon which connects the calf to the foot. "Ideally, the Achilles tendon is stretched when your foot is in contact with the floor and contracts when you walk. This natural phenomenon does not occur when you wear high heels," he explains.

When the Achilles tendon does not get stretched, your heel chords get tightened, causing you discomfort.

When your body tries to correct the body misalignment heels cause, it puts pressure on the lower spine and knees. "The abnormal weight distribution and stress from the elevated posture causes a degeneration of the spinal joint over a period of time," explains Dr Panjwani.

Nerves in the spine get compressed, causing back pain, says Dr Charaka.

The right shoes

We have all put up with sore feet, blistered feet and aching bodies in the name of fashion. If you have to wear heels, don't use very high ones, says Dr Panjwani.

"Look for heels that have a firm and broad base. Flat shoes or platform heels are best. They distribute the weight of the body evenly and don't put a heavy load on the arches of the feet."

Shoes should be made of a material that prevents slipping. "You are less likely to fall and hurt yourself. If your job requires you to walk, climb stairs or stand, then avoid wearing pencil heels," adds the doc.

We hope you will not sacrifice your health on the altar of fashion in the name of lean and mean shoes!

ENDURING BEAUTIES

ENDURING BEAUTIES

Meet the winsome beauties that heralded a new dawn of beauty pageants in India... They made the world sit up and take notice of their charm, beauty and intelligence.

Here are the winners who brought home the three international beauty pageant titles — Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Earth (earlier Miss Asia-Pacific).

Reita Faria Reita Faria
Miss World 1966

This young medical student from Mumbai created history in 1966 by becoming the first Indian to be crowned Miss World. After enjoying a year of fame, she quit modeling and decided to concentrate more on her medical studies.

In an interview Reita said, “I don’t regret my decision. I was just six months away from qualifying as a doctor when I won the Miss World title.”

Married to David Powell, Reita now lives in Dublin, Ireland. She is a mother of two girls and has become a grandmother now.

In 1977-78, Reita took a break from her career, assuming that she would resume her job after sometime. However, she changed her mind later on, as she loved spending time with her kids. “We did so many exciting things together. I learned the piano with them and even taught them cooking,” she said.

Reita was one of the jury members at the Miss India pageant 1998. On a few occasions, she has also judged the Miss World competition.

Zeenat Aman Zeenat Aman
Miss Asia Pacific 1970

In 1970, Zeenat made India proud by bringing in the crown of Miss Asia Pacific International. She stood second in the Miss India contest that year. She is still remembered for her ‘bold & the beautiful’ onscreen image.

Zeenat’s father was a Musilm and mother a Hindu, who was a German citizen. It seems Zeenat was destined to land in Bollywood as her father was one of the writers of some successful movies like Mughal-e-Azam . Zeenat and her mother shifted to Germany after her father’s death when she was in her early teens. She came back to India and did her graduation from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. She took up her first job as a journalist in Femina.

After winning the Miss Asia Pacific title and enjoying her stint as a successful model, Zeenat decided to take the plunge in Bollywood. It was not too easy for her to establish herself in the industry. However, her fate changed after Dev Anand offered her Hare Rama Hare Krishna . Dum Maro Dum ... this song, pictutrised on her, became her calling card.

In an era where most actresses preferred roles of a loyal lover or submissive wife, Zeenat picked up some really unconventional roles. Her stunning looks just added to the characters she played on the silver screen.

Madhu Sapre
Miss Universe 1992, 2nd runner up

Madhu’s long legs, toned body, her duskiness and attitude made her one of the most coveted models of the Nineties. She represented India at the Miss Universe 1992 pageant and finished third.

The final three contestants at the pageant were asked, ‘What is the first thing you would do if you were the head of your country?’ To this, Madhu answered, “I think the first thing I'll do is, I'll open up a big, the biggest sports track and field ground in India because I think we are lacking that and that's the first thing I'll do!”

Madhu doesn’t regret losing the Miss Universe crown just by an inch and stands by what she said at the pageant. “Being a sports person I had suffered because we don't have the equipment and the grounds in India. Officials told us to be truthful while answering the questions and I did.”

After Zeenat Aman in 1970, Madhu Sapre put India back on the victory path. Several Miss India winners bagged international titles after Madhu.

She is married to Gian Maria, who lives in Italy. Madhu also keeps shuttling between Italy and India and is a prominent face in the glamour industry today.

Sushmita Sen Sushmita Sen

Miss Universe 1994

She stunned the universe. And shone on Manila. Euphoria gripped India on May 21, 1994, when for the first time ever an Indian girl was crowned Miss Universe, at Manila, Philippines. And, she was there at the pageant weeping, when she was being crowned the most beautiful woman in the universe. That's Sushmita Sen, Miss Universe 1994.

It is not every day that an 18-year-old speaks of downtrodden children or explains the essence of womanhood. But this young belle from Delhi had the most compelling combination of beauty and brains.

The young lady made a powerful impact in the first round itself by introducing herself as, " Namaste , I am Sushmita Sen from India, where love is the essence of life."

In the final round of the beauty pageant, the question put to her was, "What is the essence of a woman?” to which she very craftily replied, "Just being a woman is God's gift". Followed by a spontaneous notion: "The origin of a child is a mother, a woman. She shows a man what sharing, caring, and loving is all about. That is the essence of a woman."

The judges were enchanted with her replies. And they chose her, the youngest among the 77 contestants.

Sushmita likes instrumental music, writes poetry and is fond of children. Today, she has directed her brilliance, energy and talent towards the Indian film industry.

She made her debut in Dastak followed by Zor. But it was with her comic role in David Dhawan’s Biwi No.1 that she caught movie buff’s attention. Her biggest films so far has been Main Hoon Na , in which she was paired opposite Shah Rukh Khan and Main Aisa Hi Hoon in which she played a lawyer.

Her life at present revolves around her adopted daughter Renee. Sushmita has taken the bold step of adopting a daughter and says her man will have to accept her daughter along with her.

Aishwarya Rai
Miss World 1994

Aishwarya Rai conquered the world, by claiming the Miss World title, in South Africa. Immediately after being crowned Miss World 1994, Aishwarya Rai spoke of her dream for peace for this world, and her desire to be an ambassador of peace during her one-year reign.

What qualities should the Miss World 1994 embody? To this question at the pageant, she replied, “The Miss Worlds that we have had to date have been proof enough that they must have compassion for the underprivileged and not only to the people who have status and stature. We have to look beyond the barriers that man has set for ourselves — of nationality and colour. That would make a true person, a real person."

Looking back at her life we find, her face launched a thousand shoots and almost as many ad campaigns. This constant quest for fresher, newer pastures has taken this ravishing beauty to where she is today — on top of the world.

She finally entered films and stormed the silver screen. The best actress award for the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was the turning point of her film career. Then came Devdas for which she once more won the Filmfare Best Actress Award. Dhoom 2, Jodhaa Akbar, Sarkar Raj are some of her other successful films. No wonder she has maintained her place in the top league of actors for so many years. And with several big banner projects in her kitty, she is definitely going to be in the news for long.

Fondly called Ash in the film circuit, she is married to actor Abhishek Bachchan.

Vivacious Manpreet Brar graduated from Lady Irwin College, Delhi. She was an honours student of Community Resource Management and Extension and also became the college president in the final year.

After Aishwarya Rai and Sushmita Sen’s win in the previous year, everyone had high expectations from Manpreet. After the pageant she said, “I was going the very next year after Sushmita had won. Being the first runner up was the closest that I could have come to winning and for me that was a big achievement because I was going there against tremendous odds.”

Along with some live shows and television, Manpreet took up a lot of modeling assignments after Miss Universe. Bollywood was never on her list and she says, “I never saw myself as that kind of person. Moreover it never excited me.”

Fairer Skin Tips

How To Become Fair

Remember the advertisement in which a dark colored girl gets to fulfill all her dreams after she uses a cream that makes her fair? Although natural dark color is always beautiful, a color-gone dark, because of pigmentation and harmful effect of sunrays, is appalling in most cases. So, how to get the natural fair skin back? Even though the business of beauty products promising fair skin is a worth billions of dollars, such products rarely provide any benefit and in most of cases contain harmful chemicals. Instead of splurging on costly creams and lotions, you should rummage around for home remedies, which not only give guaranteed effect, if used properly, but do not have side effects too. Read on to know various home remedies on how to become fair.

Tips - Fairer Skin

    * Make a face pack with cucumber juice and lemon juice. Extract three tablespoon of cucumber juice, mix a tablespoon of lemon juice and combine it with rose water. Apply it on the face neck and arms or on the sun exposed body parts. Leave it for twenty minutes or more and then wash off. Apply it twice daily, for better results.

    * Gram flour is very helpful in preventing suntan and bringing the color back to the skin. Mix it with lemon juice, which proves to be excellent bleach, and blend in some yogurt. Apply it every day, before taking bath, for twenty minutes and then rinse off. See the results in a few weeks only.

    * Turmeric is also an excellent skin-lightening agent and is used in various beauty creams too. Take half teaspoon of turmeric, mix it with milk (preferably raw) and add a few drops of lemon juice. Apply it thoroughly on the face and the neck and leave for twenty-five minutes. It may sting a little, but that only means it is working. Now, rinse off with water.

    * You can make your own home made bleaching agent too. Take one-teaspoon turmeric powder, mix half spoon of curd in it and add a few drops of olive oil. Put in half spoon of curd and a pinch of salt. Mix the ingredients thoroughly and apply on the face and neck. Keep on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse off.

    * Papaya pulp can also be applied directly to the skin, as a skin lightener. Drinking coconut water and applying its milk to the face also proves helpful in getting back the fair complexion. In addition, the mixture of leaves of Holy Basil and crushed orange peels can also be applied on the skin, to improve its complexion.

    * The blend of milk powder with almond oil, honey and lemon juice also brightens the face and gives it a glow. Another remedy would be to mix buttermilk with oats and thoroughly apply it on the face. Leave it for some time and then rinse. It helps in exfoliating the skin and bringing out the natural color.

    * Saffron is an excellent skin-whitener. Mix two, three strands of saffron with little milk and leave it for sometime. When the water turns pink, apply it on the face and neck. Keep for 10-15v minutes and then rinse off. It is one of the most effective home remedies.

    * With all the home remedies, make sure to add lots of fresh vegetables and fruits to your diet. Incorporate protein and drink plenty of water. Use sunscreen lotion and umbrella when going out. You will find yourself fairer within a few months.

Things to keep in mind while shopping online

While browsing through online stores, you need to check out whether a particular store offers stitching services. This is especially important while shopping in India, because the ethnic garments rely a great deal on how they are stitched. You can either choose to order the unstitched garment, and get it stitched by your personal tailor, or you can avail the stitching services on the website. This will involve a nominal extra cost, but is a good option, especially for overseas customers who might not have easy access to a tailor.

Bollywood Movie Reviews :: Jannat 2

The Bhatts have the utmost number of films which have developed into a victorious franchise. MURDER 2 has hit the bull's eye, JANNAT 2 opens this Friday, while RAAZ 3 and AASHIQUI 2 arrive later this year. So what does a film franchise precisely connote? It symbolizes a series of films wherein the title and certain constituents of a movie remain the same, but the story alters in every installment. JANNAT was about a man's pursuit for heaven, the gluttony to attain the extravagance in life as hastily as possible. But there's a disparity between the two motion pictures. JANNAT explored the dark side of the cricketing world, while JANNAT 2 underlines arms trafficking.Arms trafficking, also known as gunrunning, is the unlawful trading or smuggling of contraband weapons or ammunition. We have witnessed a number of films on drug trafficking and human trafficking, but arms trafficking has a far more deadly effect on humankind. JANNAT 2 is an unsettling motion picture that exposes the arms trade in the capital. Illegal arms are sold and bought with effortless ease and this film throws light on how the ammunition reaches the hands of the common man. The unlawful weapon trade is a flourishing business that JANNAT 2 enlightens you about. For the first time, I guess, a Hindi movie explores the precarious issue, with a stimulating romance elegantly interlaced in the narrative. Much like Bhatts' past endeavors that borrow from factual life, JANNAT 2 is a well-explored theme. Thematically, there is a traceable semblance with the Nicolas Cage starrer LORD OF WAR, which was about international arms trading. Conversely, JANNAT 2 is very desi at heart and strives to shed light on the illicit weapons trade in North India. JANNAT 2 is a compelling account of a conflicted man who ultimately faces the effects of his deeds. The movie advocates that firearms and cartridges are the actual perpetrators accountable for the fatalities and killings of blameless people. JANNAT 2 is ingeniously fashioned and skillfully filmed, while the characters are pertinent and compelling. Sonu [Emraan Hashmi] is a smooth-talking street-smart gunrunner, who has the gift of the gab and knows his trade inside out. ACP Pratap [Randeep Hooda] is a hardened maverick cop, who has a personal vendetta against the gun nexus. He will go to any lengths to crack down this nexus and he handpicks Sonu to do this job, as he is the perfect candidate to enter this racket undercover and expose everybody involved in the unlawful weapon trade. Sonu falls in love with a young doctor Jhanvi [Esha Gupta] along his journey and that throws his life's course into a tailspin with unforeseen and far-reaching consequences for all three of them. Emraan is not merely the protagonist of JANNAT 2, in view of the fact that the entire film is told from his standpoint, he's also the chronicler of the film, guiding the viewer through the events of the movie and in actual fact unraveling the story on screen. While the movie relies profoundly on Emraan's amazing abilities, director Kunal Deshmukh and writer Shagufta Rafique deserve brownie points for the movie's visual technique and taut writing. The duo justly enlighten us about the millions involved in the illegal trade and how many hands a single bullet passes through on its trip from its creation to its ultimate destructive use. JANNAT 2 is not a light-hearted movie or an action flick as the trailers may try to depict. Some of those elements are also part of it, but at the end of it all, the motion picture has a persuasive message to transport. An incredibly compelling film on a solemn issue! While the first hour of the movie sets up the stage for a fascinating second hour, it's actually the intermission point that literally sets the ball rolling. Kunal and Shagufta reserve the best for the post-interval portions. The drama is captivating and the graph of the film only scales uphill. The twists and turns in the plot [followed by a super suspense towards the end] and the vital chase sequence in the dargah form the major highlights of the film. In fact, getting the second hour right is nothing short of a challenge for film-makers and a majority of films stumble and stagger in this hour, but not JANNAT 2. The tempo is consistent throughout; maintaining the undercurrent of anxiety unswervingly. There's no tedious moment, it keeps the spectator absolutely engrossed in the on-screen occurrences. The Northern flavor coupled with the acidic dialogue [Sanjay Masoom], lingo and abundant usage of expletives makes it appear so very bona fide. All things considered I must adjoin at this juncture that every part of the lavish praise and plentiful admiration for this spellbinding fare goes to its proficient director, Kunal Deshmukh. JANNAT 2 is a tremendous album, with Pritam delivering a rich soundtrack. The placement of songs is most appropriate as well. I'd like to make a special mention of the background score [Raju Singh]. It's electrifying! The DoP's [Bobby Singh] contribution is commendable. His images are so significant to the attitude of the motion picture. Ditto for the action and chase sequences [Javed-Ejaz]. Emraan Hashmi plays Sonu Dilli, a street-smart brat who is a combination of fortitude and charisma, effortlessly. Trust me, you cannot envision anyone else doing what he does. Emraan, with his credible act, makes the devil seem charming and wickedness, charismatic. In fact, the actor is sure to astonish you with the mellowness of his performance. Randeep Hooda made you sit-up and notice his talent in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MUMBAAI and SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER and now, once again in JANNAT 2, the actor delivers yet another knockout performance. He dominates in several sequences, making you realize that if given an opportunity, the guy can steal the thunder from the best of actors. Debutante Esha Gupta enchants you with her captivating charm. She appears a tad unrefined at places, nonetheless she handles her part assertively. Manish Chaudhuri, who was wicked as hell in the recent BLOOD MONEY, outshines himself in JANNAT 2. He's simply superb! Brijendra Kala is admirable as Randeep's trusted colleague. Sumit Nijhawan, as Sarfaraz, is effective. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub, as Emraan's friend Balli, is top notch. Arif Zakaria is excellent. On the whole, JANNAT 2 is an engaging film with tremendous appeal for the masses. An absorbing story, a swift and coherent narrative, exemplary direction, fantastic action, soothing music and stellar performances summarize the highlights of this triumphant franchise.

View the full article

Bollywood Movie Reviews :: Ishaqzaade

Habib Faisal's directorial debut DO DOONI CHAAR, starring Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, depicted the aspirations of a middle-class family. It won immense critical acclaim, appreciation of the viewers and the Best Hindi Film National Award. Now his second film ISHAQZAADE has generated tremendous buzz thanks to its raw and edgy trailers, likable music and also for its setting -- the Hindi belt where guns still reign supreme. And you aren't disappointed either, for the film meets the lofty expectations, assuring you that the 2+ hours were well worth it!Yash Raj Films returns to the era of action after a hiatus, but they have not done away with their core USP, romance, as ISHAQZAADE is a passionate love story, which is the emphasizing theme of the film. In fact, ISHAQZAADE is not only about aggression and romance, you also get a glimpse of the arrogance and conceit of people in small towns in India. The story unfurls in the idealistic and intimidating scenario of North India. ISHAQZAADE depicts the love story of two defiant, rebellious individuals. A passionate love story ignited by extreme dislike. It revolves around two disputing political families, two fiery individuals and their battle for control and superiority. The two characters, Parma [Arjun Kapoor] and Zoya [Parineeti Chopra], who have been told since early days to detest each other, are almost equipped to eradicate each other and then something happens in their life post which they realize they are actually quite alike. They start wondering when we both are so similar in our personality and stance, why have we got this extreme dislike for each other? In such a setting, when two people, who have been loathing each other all this while, fall in love, things go askew. The chemistry between Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra on screen certainly follows the model of the chemistry that was created in DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE, BUNTY AUR BABLI and BAND BAAJA BAARAAT. It's infectious and that, in my opinion, is the hallmark of the film, besides the script of course. In the initial portions, both Arjun and Parineeti are at loggerheads, bartering cusswords, flaunting guns and trying to be one-up on the other. Their love story towards the middle of the first part is equally electrifying and the portrayal by Arjun and Parineeti gives the film the required sheen. The post-interval portions have several euphoric moments. The heated conversation involving Arjun's mother and the aftermath is brilliantly penned and executed. Ditto for the sequence when Arjun apologises to Parineeti in this hour. It's truly emotional! The only hitch is that the film slows down before it reaches the finale thanks to some unwanted sequences [the sequence in the laboratory] and some songs in this hour. The culmination to the film is a highpoint and mirrors a reality as well. Habib Faisal belongs to a fresh class of writers and film-makers who does away with the beaten to death drama that one gets to watch in films of this genre. Filmed at actual locations of Uttar Pradesh, the story of ISHAQZAADE has universal appeal and could have been set in any of the big cities, but the small town milieu lends the plot a kind of passion missing in large metros. Perhaps, the magnetism towards love is that much stronger in a small town, also the conflict of the people opposing love is manifold stronger likewise. Amit Trivedi, one of the most gifted and skilled musical talents, comes up with a harmonious and pleasant-sounding album. 'Ishaqzaade', 'Pareshan', 'Aafton Ke Parinde and 'Chokra Jawan' -- each of those tracks are popular already. The best part is, the songs of ISHAQZAADE have not been filmed on romantic landscapes, but at humdrum locations, which makes it so real and very much in sync with the mood of the film. I'd like to make a special mention of the cinematography [Hemant Chaturvedi], which captures the essence of North India and the rustic flavor so well. The background score [Ranjit Barot] adds a lot of pep, while the action and chase sequences [Sham Kaushal] are wonderful. Arjun Kapoor makes a fantastic debut. He has a peerless body language and a 'I-don't-give-a-damn' kind of an approach in the movie. The youngster, with his untidy look and impish smile, has already won female reverence prior to the release of the film and after having watched him emote, you can confidently say that he's blessed to depict this rebellious character in his launch vehicle itself. He comes across as fiery and rustic and at the same time self-assured and assertive in this reckless and intrepid character. To acquire a film of this scale and magnitude is a triumph by itself for a beginner, for a script and character like this happen once in a while. Parineeti Chopra is simply fantastic in this high-voltage drama. Playing the part of a spirited gun-toting girl, she is not the regular timid, decorous, withdrawn Hindi film heroine. She portrays the violent behavior coupled with the audacious and brash attitude with aplomb. Gauhar Khan is lovely in a special role. Also, she dances very well in the two tracks. Anil Rastogi [as Arjun's grand-father], Natasha Rastogi [as Arjun's mother] and Ratan Rathore [as Parineeti's father] are natural to the core. On the whole, ISHAQZAADE, a volatile and intense story with ample doses of fanatical romance, should appeal to a pan-India audience. This broadly engaging love story has a winsome pair who deliver dexterous performances, besides popular music and several poignant moments, which should appeal to fans of mainstream films. Go for it!

View the full article

Bollywood Movie Reviews :: Department

For a really long time, he has been attempting the kind of movies he aspires to make, with not much concern for the BO. The uneven response to his last few films at the ticket window hasn't shaken the confidence that viewers have in his abilities. His past few films were nowhere close to SHIVA, RANGEELA, SATYA, COMPANY, BHOOT, SARKAR, SARKAR RAJ and RAKTA CHARITRA-I, but regardless of the BO outcome, Ramgopal Varma is one film-maker who continues to make movies that he believes in.Earlier, in NOT A LOVE STORY and now, in DEPARTMENT, RGV has dared to re-invent the cinematic language by changing the visual imagery. While the visual style is worth applauding and catches your eye instantly -- RGV has filmed in angles not witnessed before in Hindi films -- it's the erratic and inconsistent writing that bogs down DEPARTMENT. No one illustrates the underbelly of crime on celluloid as persuasively as RGV. The issue with DEPARTMENT is *not* the beaten to death genre, but the screenplay that has nothing novel to offer. Encounter specialists, ruthless gangsters, inter-gang rivalry, corrupt politicians… haven't we had our fill already? One could never lay blame on RGV for taking the tried and tested route, opting for easy shortcuts while narrating a story. But, in DEPARTMENT, all you remember is style, while the substance goes for a toss. Alarmed at the hitherto unseen escalation in underworld criminal activities, the government officials hold a secret meeting in which they take a decision to create a new unit which is unofficially referred to as 'Department'. This special task force is formed to clean up the muck caused by gangsters. DEPARTMENT throws light on the power struggle that exists in the police department and one expects RGV to narrate a story we haven't heard or witnessed before. Sadly, the already exhausted genre curtails the maverick film-maker to spring surprises. To put it bluntly, DEPARTMENT is old wine packaged in a brand new bottle. Right from the characters, which we have witnessed in soooo many films of this genre, to the twists and turns in the story, RGV borrows from the past endeavors, instead of moving frontward. Besides, in an attempt to make it more mass-friendly, more 'commercial', RGV forcibly injects a couple of songs in the narrative [barring 'Cheeni', filmed on an alluring Nathalia Kaur] that are completely unwelcome in an enterprise that's out to depict realism. DEPARTMENT is soaked in high-voltage drama and action, with a consistent undercurrent of tension. As a matter of fact, there's an overdose of action in the film, though, I must admit, a few action pieces, especially the final showdown between Sanju and Rana, is deftly executed. But the absence of a riveting and absorbing screenplay looms large in the post-interval portions. Sure, some sequences do hit you hard, but the writing tilts heavily towards been-there-seen-that kind of situations persistently, promising little or no surprise as the plot unravels. RGV's obsession with the camera is evident here as well. He does away with the usual visual language this time, which is sure to win him admirers. The background score [Dharam-Sandeep] enhances the impact, while the dialogue are power-packed at times, but plain mediocre at places. The central characters get extensive scope and absolutely surrender to RGV's vision. Amitabh Bachchan is remarkably credible. Sanjay Dutt stands out with a prominent performance. But it is Rana Dagubatti who surfaces as an accomplished actor. Rana has remarkable screen charisma and is convincing in his superior portrayal of a cop. Vijay Raaz's character lacks meat. Abhimanyu Singh enacts his part with gusto. Madhu Shalini [Abhimanyu's love interest] catches your eye. Laxmi Manchu [Sanju's wife] is proficient. Anjana Sukhani underplays her part wonderfully. Deepak Tijori doesn't get much scope. On the whole, DEPARTMENT is neither novel, nor experimental, but a return to the tried and tested formula. Disappointing!

View the full article

Easy ways to take care of your nails

Easy ways to take care of your nails

New Delhi, Feb. 18 -- Chipped nails and discolouration are common problems that girls share.

Instead of mourning over what's lost or waiting for nails to re-grow, take measures to ensure your nails grow strong and pretty. The only way to keep your nails look good is by taking regular care.

Protect them "To get healthy cuticles and avoid dryness, one should use cuticle oil daily. Also, get a regular manicure done by a professional nail technician at least three times a month," says Simar Sukhija of Simar's Nail Bar.

Beauty expert Shahnaz Husain suggests, "Wear rubber gloves for your washing chores. Massage cream on the nails and cuticles daily, especially after using detergents and soaps.

" Cuticles must never be cut. Instead after soaking the nails in warm water, apply cream on the nails to soften the skin.

Then push them back gently using a cotton bud. Avoid using a sharp instrument.

"Shape your nails once a week. Try square shape as it is easy to maintain and there is lesser chance of breakage,' says Sukhija.

If the nail polish chips, do not peel it off as this removes the protective layer of the nail, thereby damaging it. Prevent yellowing Even the sun's rays can harm your nails.

For protection, use a clear nail polish as a top-coat. One can also apply sunscreen on the nails.

Sukhija says, "Apply a base-coat before the nail polish as it strengthens and protects the nail, and does not let the nails turn yellow." "A common cause of yellow nails is wearing nail polish constantly.

Nails should be left unpolished sometimes," says Husain. Nail care tips To get rid of the yellowish tint on the nails, scrape the surface of the nail with the finest-grain side of an emery board, so that the nail is not damaged, and then use UV-resistant or clear polish for protection.

You can also add baking soda to water and soak your fingers in them for 15 minutes, or rub nails with chamois leather. Another option to get rid of the yellow tint is to rub a piece of lemon on them.

You could also dilute lemon juice with water and soak your hands in it for 10 minutes everyday.
