Hi friends,

Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Did you know that ....

    * 1 recycled tin can would save enough energy to power a television for 3 hours
    * 1 recycled glass bottle would save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes
    * 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours
    * 70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials

Some Interesting Facts

    * Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled
    * The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5,000 hours
    * On average, 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish
    * As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted
    * Up to 80% of a vehicle can be recycled
    * 9 out of 10 people would recycle more if it were made easier

Disclaimer: I got the above in an email. I have no clue to what extent the statistics are true, but I guess that is not the point. We all know recycling helps in one way or the other.
So why not start recycling just for the sake of it?? After all, even a small contribution to the environment helps... Right folks??

Hoping to get positive responses from all my friends around the globe. The global warming isn't something we like, do we ??

Hello guys!
It feels great to know that people are interested in thinking about the nature...

In India, the recycling industry has been around for quite some time in the form of what we popularly know as "kabaris". And what's more, they pay you for recycling. The thing is, what the kabaris collect isn't really recycling... Yes, they do re-use the products you sell them, as long as they can, but everything has a life. Specially things like plastic.

Another thing that we commonly do in our households is throw things like paper, plastic and tin into the dustbin which carries all the other garbage as well. We have to distinguish between recyclable material and non-recyclable material, and we have to learn not to throw the recyclable material into trash.

There are other things that we, as consumers can do. We can minimise the use of plastic. We can stop the use of polythene bags. I know all this looks good on paper, but it is really up to us to implement it in our lives. We can carry paper/cloth bags whenever we go shopping.

It is important that the electronic waste is discharged properly, because recycling is a subset of proper waste disposal.

The govt. of India should be the one who has a major role to play as of now. It should make people aware of what ecologically the act of recycling symbolizes. I am sure that metropolitan cities in India are beginning to do something about recycling, but again, I don't have significant facts and figures for that.

In Canada, things are rather simpler. Everywhere you would says bins labeled - "paper", "plastic/cans", "litter". So it's not a hassle to see what you have and where it should go. This is something India should adopt as well. It should have bins placed in public places and so on.

But again, these forums are for the common man, so let's keep it to what we as the citizens of an endagered society can do about various problems.

I hope that these things made some sense. If there are any questions, I would be highly obliged to answer. And I'd be happy if people search for more information on recycling  in India and put it up for other people to use too!

Cheers all !!!
