It's the most common story ever. Boy takes girl to a fancy restaurant. They have an extravagant dinner. At dessert, boy goes down on one knee. Says, will you marry me? Girl, with a tear in her eye, says yes! Then, they live happily ever after (or not). Yawn! We're bored. Here's something different for a change. Proposals, yes; the usual, no way! This Valentine's, take a look at some crazy and outright weird proposal stories. And the twist is? It worked!

AN IN-LAW ON YOUR SIDE?
Mary and William Payne* will always remember their proposal story. Both were on a research trip to Darjeeling along with their doctorate classmates. Darjeeling also happened to be Mary's hometown, so the entire group was invited to Mary's home for lunch.
After the fun and frolic over lunch, the group returned to the hotel. After they left, Mary's father took her aside and told her that he had a strong vibe about William. He told her that he thought William was an honest, responsible and caring young man, and that she should consider him while making a choice for a husband.
Little did he know that his daughter already had strong feelings for William! Mary was thrilled to have her father's approval, but she still didn't know what William felt. And even then, she didn't have to do anything. Her father was so inspired by the young man that he didn't waste any time in approaching him to ask him for his hand in marriage with Mary.
Ideal proposal? No way! But the couple have been happily married for 32 years. And yes, Mary admits she might never have found the confidence to tell William about her feelings for him if her father would not have intervened.

FROM DEATH TO LIFE
Now how about that! As one life goes, the next starts. We hear of a story from North Carolina in the US about a man whose elder brother passed away. And during the funeral, as he stood by his brother's casket, he suddenly popped the question to his girlfriend, asking her to marry him.
Ideal proposal? No way! And we're not quite sure about his girlfriend's reaction at the time, but the reason he did it was because his brother was looking forward to his wedding and wanted to be a part of it. We do hope they've tied the knot, though - don't we just love offbeat love stories?

MARRIED AT SECOND SIGHT!
Amlesh and Yogita Ratnaparkhi are both avid trekkers, and that's how they found love. And if you think this story is going the usual way, think again.
Trip one: Amlesh and his friends are on a trekking trip. Yogita was trekking up the same hill, only with a different group. When both the groups reached the destination, they happened to meet and chat. Amlesh immediately knew he was in love. They exchanged numbers and started talking regularly.
Trip two: The next time they met was on a trek too. And this time, together. At the destination, Amlesh popped the question.
Proposal on the second meeting; an ideal proposal? No way! But the couple are happily married for 9 years.

PROPOSAL MESSENGER
Kolkata-based Suchitra and Sunit Nanda are your average couple but with an interesting story, a story of their love. Both seminary students, even talking and laughing openly was frowned on. "Falling in love", as you can imagine, was forbidden.
But what can someone in love do? Sunit fell madly in love with Suchitra the day he laid eyes on her. He knew that he wanted to marry her. And how did he propose? He used a messenger. He asked a common friend to pass on a message to Suchitra. "I am thinking about her as my life partner. What does she think about me?" was the message.
Ideal proposal? No way! But Suchitra was all smiles when she got the message. Her reply? An embarrassed smile and a nod of her head.
What followed were a couple of years of passing notes, glancing over the lunch and dinner tables, and some stolen smiles. Soon after they passed out, they got engaged, and later, married.
Today Sunit and Suchitra have been married for 8 happy years.

BRIDE SWAP!
This one's a classic, folks, and a reminder that crazy things DO happen in life. Delhi-based Maya and Haresh Chawla* are the epitome of this example.
18-year-old Maya went to attend her friend's wedding. At the week long celebrations, as a part of the bridal party, she went to visit the groom. As soon as the groom saw her, he instantly fell in love with her and demanded to be married to her instead. His family was aghast and didn't know what to do. He said, all he needed was Maya and three sets of clothing for her, that's all.
He was so adamant that his parents were left with no choice. They had to give up their choice for a daughter-in-law and give in to Haresh's choice. In a matter of 3 days, Maya and Haresh got married at a wedding that Maya had come just to attend.
Ideal proposal? No way! We're not even sure how the jilted bride-to-be took this situation. But for Maya and Haresh, the couple have been married for 4 years and have a son. Crazy things do happen, don't they?

CELEBRITY CRAZY PROPOSAL - SEAL AND HEIDI
You know about pop star Seal and supermodel Heidi Klum's love affair. But the way he proposed to her is one crazy story.
Reports say that on a vacation to the Canadian glacier ski resort, he went up a mountain by himself and constructed an igloo for her. Then a couple of days later, a helicopter picked up Heidi from the resort and dropped her off at a snowy lonely mountainside. Confused, she got off, and much to her shock, the helicopter flew away. On walking a little further, she saw this little igloo, and Seal coming out of it.
And inside the igloo he built for her, he went down on one knee and proposed. Heidi, of course, said yes, and today the couple after being married for over four years, still share an amazing chemistry, on or off cameras. (Text: Khristina Patra)
