Bubble Gum Facts

Bubble  gum is irrefutably one of the most invincible addictions in the world.  Not many people say no to bubble gum. It’s pink, it’s sinfully sweet,  it’s a great stress buster and the best part is it actually helps  somebody concentrate? You’ve definitely witnessed numerous students  grinding the gum with their teeth and occasionally blowing a perfectly  rounded pink bubble in their examination halls. Note that chewing gum  and bubble gum are not necessarily the same!  While the base of chewing  gum is a natural gum, bubble gum is synthetic. You will notice that you  can’t blow bubbles with chewing gums. How boring, right? This is because  the chewing gum base called chicle is harvested from the sap of a  tropical tree called a Sopapilla tree. Wondering how is blowing bubbles  possible? A special mixture of starches and polymers in a laboratory has  been so designed just to perform the blowing bubbles act. What’s the  whole story behind bubble gum invention? How did it get so popular?  Let’s figure it all out as we reach the bottom of this page and lap up  some juicy bubble gum facts.

Interesting & Fun Bubble Gum Facts

Ode To The Inventor

Walter  E. Diemer claimed to have accidentally invented what is now a worldwide  pink phenomenon. Hailing from Philadelphia, Walter never patented his  invention. In 1928, Walter was allegedly working as an accountant for  the Fleer Chewing Gum Company. It was here that he toyed with new gum  recipes during his spare time until he noticed that his latest brew was  oddly unusual. Apart from being less sticky than normal, it was more  stretchable and that the concoction produced bubbles as well! Walter  wasn’t perturbed by his lack of royalty and instead, convinced himself  that the best reward was that he had indeed invented it himself! He  would hold bubble blowing contests for kids that would drop by his place  to hear the tale of his fantastic unintended invention. Cheers to  Walter! Cheers to a life with bubble gum!

Fun Facts

     * Guinness Book of World Records reveals that the largest bubble to  have ever been blown in the world measures 23 inches in diameter!

* 'Blibber-Blubber' was the brand name of the first ever bubble game to be marketed!

     * You’ll be astonished to learn that the energy produced by bubble gum  chewing Americans is sufficient to illuminate a city of ten million  people. A trustworthy mathematician has proved this proclamation with  smooth calculations and inferences.

* Don’t you hate  it when you pop a bubble and it gets stuck or intertwined with your  hair? Don’t be hasty and hurt yourself. By simply rubbing the gum patch  with peanut butter, your problem will soon be solved!

* Bubble gum popularity reached an all new high when it was included in the ration kits given to U.S. in the 1940s.

     * Various tribes in Africa would accept large quantities of bubble gum  to settle traditional payments for wives as opposed to the standard  sheep and oxen.

* All over the world, the annual consumption of bubble gum is reported to be 100,000 tons!

     * Why is bubble gum always pink? Remember when Walter unintentionally  created a potion that unquestionably was the tipping point of his career  or life overall? Turns out that pink was the one and only shade of food  coloring he had within his proximity!

* Richard Walker has  achieved unconventional fame by creating a record for chewing 135 sticks  of bubble gum for 8 hours at a stretch. He was hence bestowed the  coveted 'Chomp Title' which was formerly carried by Sue Jordan, who  chewed eighty pieces of gum for all of five hours and twelve minutes!

     * Edward L. Fenimore, the head of the Philadelphia Chewing Gum Company  was reported to have blown a bubble within a bubble within a bubble! Now  isn’t that a triple whammy or what!

*  For a long time,  citizens were disillusioned by the false bubble gum fact that if  swallowed, the gum resides in your gastrointestinal tract for seven  whole years! This was soon proved untrue since swallowed bubble gum will  pass through your system and not get stuck in your intestines! The  fiber in the gum base renders it indigestible. So, if you were still  skeptical, you can relax after reading this!

Walter Diemer  should not just be loved for his invention but also his lovely attitude  which shines through as he put forth the beautiful quote- "I've done  something with my life. I've made kids happy around the world.” Hope you  are content with the splash of bubble gum facts and we didn’t end up  bursting your bubble.
